People often say moving house is nearly as stressful as divorce or bereavement.

Whatever it is you know you’ll spend a lot of your time going through your belongings finding things you forgot you even had.  The hardest part of moving house is working out what to keep and what to get rid of.

Sitting in a room with a pile of unmade cardboard boxes can be more than a little overwhelming.  The easy part is probably going to be booking your removal company as you’ve decided to part pack yourself, but what that means is you need to decide whether you need that box of jumbled up wires to electronics you don’t know if you even still have.

What do you keep?

Each draw or cupboard you open can be a pleasant surprise or sometimes a sad one. Either way the memories can come flooding back. A box of your favourite baby clothes, a pile of photographs that have never made the album, mums favourite teapot you could never quite part with.

The advice we would give when moving house is plan early. Take a room at a time. Don’t rush it. Embrace the opportunity to re-connect with your memories. These personal items were kept for a reason so why not enjoy them again before you decide what to do with them.

Use the experts

Make yourself a list of what you need to do. Read our packing tips and download our home movers checklist to help you on your way. Remember this can be an exciting time with new beginnings. Don’t go for the cheapest removal quote, pick a company who is a member of a trade body (e.g BAR, British Association of Removers). Remember how you felt when you were packing your precious belongings, why would you want to hand them over to someone who is not going to take care of them? Creating a good rapport with them will help your transition be a smooth and painless experience and you can look forward to sinking into your sofa on your first night.
