Where to buy in the Chiltern Hills: 3 top market towns for homebuyers looking for good-value homes, outstanding schools and a 60-minute London commute.

According to a recent article in Home and Property for home buyers seeking value for money, gorgeous countryside and a do-able London commute, the Chiltern Hills are the equal of the Cotswolds without the high price tag.

With almost 20 market towns within 100 miles of the capital, these green lungs stretch through Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Oxfordshire.

Research from Savills shows wide-ranging average property prices, from £1 million-plus in Beaconsfield, Bucks, to under £300,000 in Bedford.

Property Prices

The average Chesham property price of £406,774 buys a three-bedroom Victorian house. The market square is pretty and there’s a good choice of places to eat and drink, including several pubs.

The high street has a good range of general shops and there is a Sainsbury’s and a Waitrose. The Elgiva theatre and cinema offers musicals, ballet and panto.

Chesham is encircled by open space, perfect for walkers exploring the Chess Valley. There are only two London trains an hour but the Chiltern line is two miles away at Amersham, with Marylebone trains from 32 minutes. People come for value, the grammar school and the location on the edge of the Chilterns.
