Wherever you are moving to, choosing the right removal company can make all the difference on the day.

Here is our advice on how to choose a removal company that’s right for you.

Moving house takes a great deal of hard work and can be physically exhausting. You will always have more belongings than you think and organising the whole day can be exhausting and stressful. Think about your property and its access. Will you be able to carry all of your boxes and furniture down the stairs? Do you have a lot of antiques or valuables that will need extra care?  Sometimes it’s better to get the experts in. Here’s where to start and how to choose a removal company.

Get more than one quote

As soon as you have an idea of your moving date contact a number of removal companies and get them round to quote. Always get them to visit your property as you’ll get a feel for their service and professionalism and the quote will be much more accurate. No surprises later. Ask them to quote for their packing and storage services if you think you’ll need them.  Online estimates are fine for you just to get a feel for costs but should never be used as a final cost.

Plan early

Getting quotations  can take a  few of weeks  so give yourself enough time to choose a removal company. Often removal companies are booked up many weeks in advance, so you should  start looking for a removal company well before your completion date is due. Some removal companies offer a provisional booking service so it is worth asking. As soon as you have information about your new property let the removal company know so they can plan for size of trucks and the size of the removal team needed.

Insurance, are you insured?

As a starting point check your home contents insurance to see what level of insurance you have and if your property is insured on moving day. Most professional removal companies will have insurance in place for any breakages or loss of your property while in transit. Discuss it with your removal company to check the details and if they haven’t got any they might not be right for you. Remember cheapest is not always the best!

Ask your friends and family

Personal recommendations are always good. Ask your friends and family who they have used in the past and would they use them again. When they come to quote you will be able to get a feel for how professional they are. How they deal with your questions, if they offer you advice on packing, where you can get packing supplies, how helpful and friendly they are?  Remember they are moving all your personal and sentimental belongings so you need to trust them and you want your moving day to be as stress free

Final checks on how to choose a removal company

Most professional and trustworthy removal companies will be members of the BAR (British Association of Removers). An organisation dedicated to providing excellence in the removals industry for the benefit of both removal companies and their customers. They set standards and a code of conduct for their members, so you should be reassured of their professionalism and conduct at all times.
